The Role of Energy Lawyers in Responding to the Iran Crisis
In an expert opinion piece, Munir Hassan and Hywel Davies, Chairs of the City of London Law Society Energy Committee note that with English law being the dominant choice in charterparty and international oil & gas contracts, the legal questions have fallen onto the desks of solicitors in London and English law solicitors operating in the region.
In times of crisis, they argue, there is an appreciation that legal certainty is itself a form of energy security. Lawyers have been working alongside clients for the past years to help to create a more liquid and resilient European energy market, involving new energy networks and LNG facilities and more diverse sources of energy (both renewables and international suppliers).
This work, they suggest, has better placed Europe to deal with this more volatile era for global energy. English law and the work lawyers advising on English law do are proving to be stabilising forces in this moment of geopolitical crisis.
